RAC data shows that the average petrol price was 158.03p per litre on Thursday, while diesel was 191.11p. The motoring group also noted that a tank of petrol is currently £13.86 more expensive than it was at the beginning of the war, which started on February 28. A full tank of diesel now costs £26.80 more at £105.11.

Both petrol and diesel are manufactured from crude oil, and with oil prices jumping by 35% since the beginning of the war, it has played a huge role in pump prices for motorists.

Drivers should not expect a big fall in pump prices any time soon, according to RAC. However, its rival, AA, has noted that wholesale fuel costs are lower now than at the start of the week.

Luke Bosdet, the AA's spokesman on pump prices, said: "Based on the fuel industry's rule of thumb of a 10 to 14-day lag between wholesale cost movements and those at the pump, drivers should expect prices on forecourts to level by next weekend and then fall – providing the ceasefire holds."

Iran and the US agreed to a two-week ceasefire this week.

The United States has agreed to halt its military strikes on Iran. While Iran had agreed to the “complete, immediate and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz, a key passageway for world gas and oil.

However, there have been doubts and concerns over the durability of the ceasefire after Israel sent strikes to Lebanon on Wednesday.

The country's Civil Defence said at least 254 people were killed and 1,165 others were injured in the attacks.
