Tesco is introducing new parking bays across 10 of its supermarkets aimed at giving Brits a break as the school holidays end. The retail giant's "Park & Pause" initiative allows people to park in designated bays for up to half an hour.

Visitors will be offered a free hot drink from the Tesco Finest range and a biscuit as they take a breather at the end of the Easter holiday. The retailer's limited edition bays will be available at 10 stores from Saturday (April 11). Tesco said its own research showed 68% of parents with children aged under four offer to do a shop just to get some time alone. Parking spaces will be marked with a stopwatch symbol.

This is almost twice the figure for customers who don't have children, 38%, according to Tesco's research.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "The supermarket can be the perfect place to escape from day-to-day life, either for a solo trip or a mooch with family, as shoppers peruse new products or special offers, grab a snack, coffee or treat while they’re there or enjoy a small change of scenery."

The "Park & Pause" spaces are part of the retailer’s "Need anything from Tesco?" campaign, which highlights the extras it offers customers.

Perks include free nappies for premature babies, free fruit and veg for schools and ways to make money go further with Clubcard Reward partners on everything from meals out and holidays abroad to £2.50 cinema tickets.

There is also a "Quiet Hour" scheme for people looking for a calmer time to shop. It applies to larger Tesco stores on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 9am and 10am.

"Park & Pause" spaces can be found at the following Tesco stores across the UK on Saturday:

Cardiff Culverhouse Cross Extra

Coventry Walsgrave Superstore

Newcastle Upon Tyne Extra

Nottingham Top Valley Extra
