The chattering classes are at it again on Brexit! Now's the chance apparently to get back into bed with Brussels – and reverse the democratic will of the people – all because of Donald Trump and this war in Iran. Yeah, cause what screams power more than a bunch of small and pensionable ex-empires clubbing together for one last hurrah?

Frankly, stuff the EU! If Brexit has been a damp squib that owes more to its botching by the Boriswave Tories – who decided an electorate which voted for tougher immigration controls actually didn't want to bother with a border – than to any fundamental problem with leaving.

Reform's big opportunity now is to focus on the Commonwealth, starting with the CANZUK states of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, all countries which share a king, language and legal system.

Combined these four would represent the world's largest polity and its third largest economy. Their individual economies would be complimentary too: Australia, for example, could supply much of Canada's industrial needs, while Canada's ample energy resources could power us in Blighty!

Beyond the four are 12 other Realm nations as well as dynamo Commonwealth republics like my adopted home, Singapore. Funnily enough, much of the world still thinks a lot of us. If only our uniparty politicians did! Reform can now build a foreign and defence policy around this plucky Commonwealth. Our volatile world offers just the time for it. Moreover, the man likely to be Canada's next PM – Pierre Poilievre – is all-in on CANZUK.

The West is hardly in its heyday. But that decline is most acute in sclerotic Western Europe.

Seriously, who the hell wants to throw their lot in with them? High time instead to revamp and revitalise our Commonwealth ties, and offer a fresh alternative for those hopeless souls still aspiring for a return to a decaying and geriatric European superstate.
