Monty Don opened up about his childhood where he made a candid admission. The beloved horticulturist, 70, is adored by fans who tune into Gardeners' World. The TV star recently sat down with Gyles Brandreth on his Rosebud podcast, leaving the host stunned by his words. The BBC favourite spoke about his parents and his twin sister, Alison, who suffered a near-fatal car accident at age 19, resulting in a broken neck and blindness. She went on to make a full recovery, later getting married and having children.

Monty also detailed his own health woes as he revealed a cancer diagnosis at the age of ten. Gyles quizzed: "When you were ill, you had a form of cancer? How long ago was that?" The gardening expert replied: "I was ten."

The podcast host remarked: "Ten! Oh my gosh."

Monty went on to explain that he was not full aware at the time it was cancer.

He continued: "I was playing football at school and fell. It was very, very painful. I was at boarding school. They took me to the hospital and I went and had an X-ray."

Monty said the matron told him he had been "really difficult" during the X-ray and said he would have to perform a further imaging test. But it wasn't until years later that her admission had finally hit him as he was diagnosed with marrow cancer, also known as multiple myeloma which a type of blood cancer that affects your bones and different parts of your body.

He explained it was just before Christmas and he was taken to hospital to have the tumour removed.

Speaking on Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth, he explained, "They had found something in the X-ray - what they found was a tumour. I have the scar. They took the bone out and scraped the marrow out. It was marrow cancer."

"Luckily, it hadn't spread," Monty explained. "[The doctors] said if it had been six months later, it could have gone to the rest of my body. That wouldn't have been good."

He underwent radiothreapy treatment for a year but made a full recovery.

Monty admitted it was one of the loneliest moments in his life as he detailed his struggles during his childhood.

This is not the first time one of Britain's most recognisable faces has been open up about his health. The beloved presenter has, in recent years, opened up about his personal wellbeing and the realities of ageing.

Monty has hosted Gardeners' World, the popular show, since 2003, taking a break after a minor stroke in 2008.

He made a full recovery and returned to television.
