According to reports, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have not been included on the star-studded guest list for this year’s Met Gala, which is being held in New York City on May 4. Vogue's Anna Wintour, who is behind the spectacle, has been cited as the main factor behind the Duchess of Sussex’s alleged snub from the event.
NewsNation has suggested Meghan was pinning her hopes on links to A-listers like Serena Williams and Beyoncé Knowles Carter to “help her land an invite”. However, this apparently did not happen, despite Queen Bey co-chairing the event alongside Venus Williams and Nicole Kidman. While we have to wait until the day to see who rocks up, it’s understood some stars who will be working the red carpet on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art include Sydney Sweeney, Kris Jenner, Cardi B, Rosalía, Jacob Elordi and Robert Pattinson.
The online reaction to Meghan’s alleged diss has been relentless, with this omission proving that the star has lost her sparkle among the Hollywood elite.
If the 44-year-old really has been shunned by Met Gala organisers, it could be the final nail in the coffin for Meghan, as it would mean she’ll have to relinquish her title as Hollywood Royalty for once and for all.
The Met Gala is widely seen as the gatekeeper of status - and if you’re a social climber who is not on that all-important guest list, it hints your decline is imminent, as getting back on a podium isn’t easy to achieve.
To add salt to the potential wound, many other royals have been invited to the gala in the past, including Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, who attended the glittering event in both 1995 and 1996.
Meanwhile, Harry’s cousin, Princess Beatrice, was invited in 2018, and other royals who have been include Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Queen Rania of Jordan.
Each year, rumours swirl that it will be “Meghan’s year” to be part of the extravagant event, but she’s yet to have appeared, which could be due to scheduling clashes or lack of an invitation.
Either way, Meghan is caught between a rock and a hard place. If she is invited and attends, she risks having every element of her outfit scrutinised and being accused of being “too Hollywood”.
If she politely declines the invite, people may assume she’s been snubbed or that she’s lost her appeal.
With less than four weeks to go until the big day, I, for one, will be keeping my eyes peeled for the Duchess of Sussex to make her Met Gala debut.
