Sir Keir Starmer has been brutally savaged online after taking to social media amidst the Iran war crisis to talk about the "frustrating" price of Mini Eggs. Britain's PM has warned the Middle East conflict will "affect the future of our country" but insisted the UK was "well-placed" to weather the storm as the conflict hits the economy and pushes up fuel and energy costs for consumers.
However, despite the global turmoil, Sir Keir decided to take some time out of his busy schedule to film a video on TikTok addressing the cost of Mini Eggs ahead of Easter. A 256g bag of the tasty Cadbury's treat currently retails at £6.20 in Tesco.
Under the banner "can you lower the price of Mini Eggs?", Sir Keir was filmed sitting in what appeared to be the Cabinet Room of Downing Street. Discussing the price he said it was often going "one direction", adding: "I get this question a lot on TikTok, and I do understand, it's really frustrating.
"The answer is, we can't tell supermarkets what to charge, but I know that whatever's going on in the world, and there's a lot, whatever's going on in politics, and there's a lot, for most people the cost of living is the single most important issue."
Sir Keir claimed the Government were trying to make the conditions so that people had more money in their pocket so they afford Mini Eggs.
However, the attempt by the prime minister to engage with a social media audience appeared to have backfired.
One user commented: "The one direction you need to be going is out that (sic) job."
Another added: "You’ve just massively increased tax on us and our employers... so what are u talking about."
Someone else chimed in: "The cost of living is a thing because of you."
And one commentator tried to invoke an offensive song which has been sung about Sir Keir at a few public events recently, they added: "Altogether now Keir Starmer’s a …."
Given that the content was post on April 1, many also thought perhaps it was a joke posting but in fact it appears to be a genuine decision by Number 10 to discuss the price of Mini Eggs.
