Carol Vorderman has slammed “deranged” US president Donald Trump – and issued a key piece of advice for both prime minister Sir Keir Starmer and the wider UK. The former Countdown star, who has typically supported Labour throughout her TV career, took a unique approach when asked by the Daily Express what she’d recommend.

Speaking at the UK Italian Awards on March 30, Carol said: “I strongly recommend the media listen to what Ed Davey is saying, because he calls Trump out. I do understand that Starmer is in a tricky situation, we all understand that. You’re dealing with a deranged man.”

She added: “But I’m glad that all the European leaders are coming together now, and saying, ‘This can’t go on, we need to help ourselves’.

“He’s hugely unpopular, Trump. He’s hugely unpopular here and he’s hugely unpopular in his own country now.”

Liberal Democrats leader Davey has insisted Britain “must end its dangerous dependence on Trump’s America” for its nuclear deterrent.

In his speech to the York Liberal Democrat conference, he said: “Britain’s nuclear deterrent must be genuinely, verifiably ours – not dependent on Trump or whoever his successor may be. Trump has proven we can’t rely on America as a dependable ally.”

Davey has also branded King Charles’ upcoming visit to the US a “mistake”, as he prepares to address Congress and attend a state dinner, all while Trump insults the British military.

Her stepfather Gabriel Rizzi – “who became my dad” – was an Italian prisoner of war during World War 2, and was being held in Wales when he met Carol’s mum Edwina Davies, a farmer.
