The Original Factory Shop will close four stores in April following the retailer's collapse into administration. The closures will be spread across four English towns, from Cornwall to County Durham, which are expected to shut their doors forever on April 4.

It follows a host of closures this week. The struggling retailer closed its Newquay shop today, while Norfolk lost three shops on Friday, with stores shutting in Snettisham and the seaside towns of Gorleston-on-Sea and Cromer. On the same day, the neighbouring county of Suffolk lost its Bungay store. The chain plunged into administration on January 28, putting 137 shops and 1,180 jobs at risk. The company's online store closed with immediate effect, but shops continued to trade while administrators assessed options. However, several shops have since shut their doors forever.

In January, administrators Interpath said the retailer, which sells fashion, perfumes and toiletries, suffered under challenging trading conditions. It cited issues such as rising costs linked to inflation, fragile consumer confidence and Government policies which led to "significant increases" in labour costs.

Rick Harrison, managing director at Interpath and joint administrator, said: "The Original Factory Shop has long been a cornerstone of local high streets up and down the country.

"Unfortunately, however, trading challenges have impacted the business such that the company had to be placed into administration.

"Over the coming weeks, we will be working closely with TOFS' dedicated team of employees as we endeavour to operate all stores as a going concern while we assess options for the business."

The company has launched clearance sales, with goods being slashed by up to 50%. All products are now being 'sold as seen', and they can only be returned if they are faulty.

A notice on its website stated: "After more than 55 wonderful years serving communities across the UK, TOFS will soon be closing its doors. To say thank you for your loyalty, we’re offering up to 50% off across our stores – but only while stocks last."
