Iconic rockers The Who have announced the tragic death of a "true legend" who worked with them on many tours. Taking to Instagram they shared a picture of Gordon Torrington who worked on the lighting for their UK and European tours and on countless shows for Teenage Cancer Trust. Alongside it they penned a heartfelt tribute: "We are deeply saddened to share the news that our colleague and friend Gordon Torrington has passed away.

"Gordie was a true legend in our industry. He touched so may lives through his work, his character and his presence and will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. We are all truly devastated by this loss. Our thoughts, love and heartfelt condolences are with Gordon’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. He will be sadly missed by everybody connected with Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall and with The Who. Rest in peace, Gordie x."

The band, which features original members Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend, didn't reveal a cause of death and it is believed he died some days ago.

Ipswich native Gordon was a Senior Account Manager at Lights Control Rigging who also shared their devastation in a social media post.

"Gordie was a true legend in our industry. He touched so many lives through his work, his character and his presence and will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. We are all truly devastated by this loss. Our thoughts, love and heartfelt condolences are with Gordon’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time," they wrote.

Fond tributes flooded in for the beloved crew member as friends and colleagues learned the sad news.

Commenting on The Who's post on Instagram a former colleague wrote: "My first encounter with Gordy was at the @mtv_europe EMAs, where he was part of the fantastic @prg_uk team. We reconnected at the @teenage_cancer events at the @royalalberthall, where he represented @lightscontrolrigging. Gordy served as our crew chief on many @officialthewho shows, bringing a fun-loving spirit, pride, and frequent tea breaks that made every show feel like a family reunion. His departure has left us heartbroken, but I'll always cherish the memories of him as a kind-hearted gentleman."

On Facebook another added: "So very sad. Gordy you will be so missed. Just heartbreaking news. Deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."

A third chimed in: "Gordon Torrington was the best part of all of us industry folks. Funny, sweet, caring, loyal, smart. He loved a lil boogie on the dance floor (have evidence), LOVED a Brussel sprout . Gordo was the kind of human you really, REALLY miss when they are gone."

Meanwhile a fourth lamented: "Rest in Peace Gordy. Shocking news. You were a genuine diamond. Condolences to your family and all who loved you."
