Now Tommy has shared a health update on social media, teaming up with Prostate Cancer UK, who helped to share his journey. Tommy said: “The article about my prostate cancer journey went live today and before anything else I want you to know that I’m okay. Truly. I’m well, I’m working and I’m feeling good. But seeing it all written down again reminded me just how frightening that moment was when I first heard the word cancer. It hit me hard and it changed my life in an instant.
“I was in my 50s when I got the diagnosis and it was a shock I’ll never forget. But now at 87 I’m still here still laughing still surrounded by love and I count that as a blessing every single day. I’ve been on active surveillance for more than twenty years and I’m incredibly grateful that my levels have stayed low.”
He credited his wife Hazel Winman as his “rock”, his “calm” and his “strength”, adding: “My family have supported me in ways they’ll never fully realise.
“I also want to say a heartfelt thank you to @prostatecanceruk for giving me the platform to share my story today. Their support and dedication to helping men understand this disease means the world to me.
“If my story encourages even one man to get checked then it’s worth it. Please don’t put it off. A simple test could save your life. And if everything comes back clear you’ll walk out feeling ten feet tall.
“Thank you for the love you’ve shown me over the years. I’m still here still doing what I love and still grateful for every new day. Look after yourselves. And get that test done!”
