BBC Breakfast anchor Sally Nugent wowed as she slipped into a Lycra leggings and a gym top to work out with her pal and personal trainer. The host looked at ease as she lifted weights in various positions – kneeling on a workout mat, performing a wall sit and springing into a press-up.

Posting to Instagram, the BBC star wrote: “My clever friend and PT Nicky McBurney has spoken to @womenshealthuk about how it is possible to get fitter/stronger as we get older.

“We have been training together consistently for the last 15 years – whatever the weather.

She joked of her friend: “P.S., don’t be fooled by the smile – she’s MEAN!”

McBurney explained to Women’s Health that Sally has swapped out “punishing HIIT sessions” for “daily walking, gentle jogs and bike rides”.

She explained: “Fifteen years ago, like many women, Sally’s training was far more cardio-focused – lots of high-intensity sessions, burpees and chasing calorie burn.

“Today, the focus is completely different, because as we get older, we need a different approach.”

The PT added that due to Sally’s “stressful” BBC job, she should avoid “layering intense training on top”, which “can elevate cortisol levels further.”

This can then lead to poor sleep quality, hormonal balance and energy levels.
