Iconic drummer Shinya Yamada from popular Japanese rock band Luna Sea, who first formed in 1986, died at the age of 56 on Tuesday February 17. The band confirmed the news on their official website. She said she was proud of how he always remained positive and determined, and how he had been planning to resume performing with Luna Sea in March.
Shinya had disclosed he was battling a brain tumour a year ago. This followed his 2020 announcement he was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. Despite his health woes he continued to play with the band while receiving treatment, which included radiation, chemotherapy and seven surgeries. However the treatment for his most recent cancer meant he had to miss some shows as it impaired his mobility and the band announced is former protégé and Siam Shade drummer Jun-ji would be filling-in for him at the Lunatic Fest in November 2025.
His bandmates Sugizo, Ryuichi, J and Inoran paid touching tribute to their bandmate of over three decades as they broke the news of his death.
"...His condition suddenly worsened and he passed away far too soon... His indomitable spirt and sunny smile never faded until the end and was a ray of hope for all the band members and crew," they wrote on their website. "The soulful beats he has been creating for over 35 years and his deep love for music will never cease to ring in the story of Luna Sea.
"We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the fans who have supported him until now. We would appreciate it if you could join us in praying for his soul to rest in peace."
They also indicated they would be planning an event where fans could say goodbye to the musician.
