Outlander star Caitríona Balfe has made a startling revelation regarding how the beloved fantasy drama series wraps up.

During a recent conversation, the 46 year old Irish actress, famed for her portrayal of Claire Fraser in Outlander, confessed she remained uncertain about the series' conclusion, despite the episode titles and trailer being released, reports the Daily Record.

"I am as curious and in anticipation of seeing the rest of the season as everyone else will be," she told Entertainment Weekly.

At the time of speaking, Balfe had viewed only the opening three episodes of Outlander's eighth and final season.

Her surprising disclosure follows showrunner Matthew B. Roberts' revelation that he filmed multiple conclusions for the series.

This strategy stemmed from a determination to prevent spoilers whilst also providing Roberts with numerous choices during the final edit.

Nevertheless, he informed the publication he'd settled on his preferred conclusion for Outlander several years previously.

Just a handful of individuals know how Outlander ends, and Balfe isn't alone - co-star Sam Heughan is equally unaware.

Roberts remarked about the various finales they shot: "They all could have been the ending, and that's why people believed them."

The Outlander chief also assured viewers that season eight would address "many questions".

However, considering the vast and complex storyline, these unresolved threads would receive either "tight bow or a very loose bow" treatment. Roberts stated it would be down to viewers to "judge" how satisfactorily the questions had been addressed.

Those eager to discover the truth behind Jamie Fraser's (Heughan) ghost would also be receiving some form of explanation.

This has remained a core mystery throughout the series ever since the apparition appeared in Outlander's very first episode.

Since the television adaptation has overtaken Diana Gabaldon's novels - the American writer is presently working on her 10th instalment in the Outlander series - the programme will be departing from the original material.

This indicates that Outlander enthusiasts could be witnessing two separate conclusions: one for the television version and another for the books.

Gabaldon has previously confirmed that the programme's creators haven't incorporated any content from her forthcoming novel A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out, which has yet to confirm a publication date.

Outlander season 8 will premiere on Starz in the USA on March 6 and on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK on March 7
