Grey's Anatomy star Eric Dane has died at 53-years-old after a short battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

ALS is a disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. This causes a loss of voluntary muscle control, paralysis and respiratory failure. It is a a progressive and fatal disease.

A statement from the Dane's family reads: "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world."

"Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight."

"He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time."

Eric continued to work despite his ill-health, but was not well enough to attend the Emmy Awards last month. He enjoyed a 35-year career, during which time he was in Grey's Anatomy, Charmed, Euphoria and many more TV series and films.

Eric portrayed Dr Mark Sloan, also known as McSteamy, in the hit show Grey's Anatomy between 2006 and 2012. He returned for a cameo in 2021.

He was also in nine episodes of fantasy drama Charmed in 2003 and 2004.

Eric continued to film psychological teen drama Euphoria even despite his illness. The third series, of which Eric is part, is yet to air.

Around 5,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed in the US annually.
