A map from the Met Office shows 11 areas under a yellow warning for snow and ice. People living in the affected parts of the British Isles have been warned built up snow and ice could lead to slips and falls as well as delayed journeys.

The warning came into force at 3pm on Monday and ends at 10am on Tuesday (February 17). There's also a risk from icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, according to the Met Office. Rain, sleet and snow spread southeastwards overnight, with scattered, wintry showers forecast to move in from the northwest into this morning.

The Met Office's Chief Forecaster, Steve Willington, said: "A cool pool of air dominates much of the UK for the start of this week, bringing with it blustery showers, winter hazards and the possibility of some disruption at times.

"Initially, the snow risk is reserved for northern parts of Scotland with the highest accumulations - possibly 5-8cm - over the highest ground, though a couple of centimetres are possible to low levels at times.

"North and north-eastern parts of Scotland will also see increasingly gusty winds Monday evening and night, with gusts of 50-60 mph possible on some exposed coasts."

Forecasters had warned that much of the UK would see temperatures fall below freezing overnight on Monday, leaving "a cold night for all of us".

The yellow weather warning for snow and ice covers much of Scotland. It was particularly cold in Braemar, where the mercury plunged below freezing to -5.3C.

Two further warnings, both for ice, applied to Northern Ireland and a swathe of the UK, stretching through the north east of England to around Ipswich. All the yellow warnings are set to last until 10am today.
