Local residents in Bedworth have criticised plans to build 150 houses on land known to flood. The proposed homes will be built in the Bedworth Woodlands area, which often experiences road closures due to flooding, requiring rescues of stranded motorists.

Both residents and a councillor are concerned about the effects the building work could have on an area already affected by surface water. According to the Environment Agency, the specific building area, Woodlands Lane, is in flood zone area three, which means it has a high likelihood of flooding.

Councillor Martin Walsh has said that flood alleviation plans put in place would not be sufficient for the amount of water in the area, reports the BBC.

The councillor, who has lived in the town since 1987, stated that “the area quite consistently gets flooded” and that the plotting of homes on the field is “a bad move”.

He added: "We're losing more green space and the infrastructure in this area would not take it.

"The road constantly gets blocked with traffic, it's not suitable for heavy good vehicles. There'll be a minimum of 300 cars - the traffic will increase dramatically."

Taylor Wimpey, the company carrying out the build, has said the risk of flooding had been "thoroughly assessed," adding that the approved flood risk assessment states that the development would not heighten the risk on or off-site.

Locals are also against the plans, including Karl Mayer who branded it as a "disaster" and said that there's "no benefit for local residents whatsoever".

A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said: "We recognise the flooding concerns currently affecting the community of Bedworth," the spokesperson said.

"We are committed to ensuring that our proposed development at Woodlands Road does not increase flood risk to the local area.

"We continue to work closely with the relevant authorities in order to deliver a development which will provide much-needed housing, whilst not increasing any flood risk to the local area."
