Matti Caspi, a composer, singer, and lyricist who produced some 1,000 songs, including many of Israel's most beloved hits, has died aged 76. Dubbed one of Israel's greatest musicians, the performer died on Sunday morning. His heartbroken family issued a statement following the tragic news. It read: “With aching hearts and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband and dear father. The light of our lives has gone out.”
Tributes have poured in for the beloved singer.
"With great sorrow, we bid farewell today to Mati Caspi, the towering singer and songwriter who touched the souls of us all and gave us classics that became enduring pillars of Israeli music," Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar said in a statement following Caspi's death
"Songs such as 'Brit Olam' and 'Ma Zot Ahava' accompanied generations of Israelis through their most beautiful and most painful moments, becoming a soundtrack of love and hope. His legacy will continue to resonate for many years to come. May his memory be a blessing."
Caspi announced in May last year that he had cancer and it had metastasized throughout his body in a heartbreaking admission.
