The miserable conditions persist as Aberdeen in Scotland has endured a fortnight without a glimpse of sunshine - marking the longest sunless spell the region has recorded since documentation commenced in 1957. Unfortunately, the dreary outlook showing no signs of improvement, the Daily Record reports.

Elsewhere across the nation, south-west England and south Wales haven't experienced a single dry day, data from the Met Office confirms. These regions have been battered by 50 per cent more precipitation than typical levels, resulting in a substantially wetter than average January.

Furthermore, the deluge isn't anticipated to cease until Sunday, February 8 at the earliest. A yellow rain warning remains in force from 5am on Thursday through to 9pm Friday covering sections of Wales, south-west and south-east England and the West Midlands.

This threatens additional flooding nationwide as soil conditions remain extensively waterlogged.

A separate yellow warning affects Northern Ireland from midday Thursday through to midnight on Friday, whilst a snow warning operates from 3pm Thursday until 3am Friday spanning portions of the East Midlands, north-east and north-west England and Yorkshire.

Reflecting on the dreadful meteorological conditions marking the year's opening, Dan Stroud, Met Office operational meteorologist said: "Unfortunately, there's no end in sight."

Persistent cloud and downpours are expected to plague eastern Scotland, including Aberdeen, throughout Saturday. Meanwhile, heavy showers will persist across the south during Saturday morning before gradually moving northwards into Wales and the Midlands.

However, the outlook suggests some brighter spells may emerge for western Scotland, along with portions of East Anglia and the south-east on Sunday. Those in the southern and western regions of the UK can expect somewhat drier conditions.

Mr Stroud explained: "Very little in the way of change, and the reason for it really is that we've got a big area of high pressure way out to the far north and east of the country and that's stopping areas of low pressure from moving through.

"Until that area of high pressure sort of shifts out of the way, we're not really going to see see much of a change in the forecast.

"At the same time, we've got the jet stream way to the south, bringing exceptional wet weather to Spain and Portugal."
