MPs have voted on a bid by the Tories for documents on Lord Mandelson's appointment as ambassador to the US to be released. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch used a parliamentary process called a humble address to demand papers showing how he got the Washington job as Sir Keir Starmer faces intense pressure.

The Government tabled an amendment agreeing to share documents as long as they do not prejudice national security or international relations in an attempt to avoid a Labour revolt. Papers include messages exchanged with key figures in Sir Keir's inner circle including chief of staff Morgan McSweeney and top ministers.

It comes as Lord Mandelson has quit the Lords and is facing a police probe for alleged misconduct in public office after a new release from the Epstein Files appeared to show internal government information on the response to the global financial crisis in 2009 was sent to Epstein.

Speaking during PMQs, Sir Keir insisted Lord Mandelson "betrayed our country" by leaking information to Epstein.

The Prime Minister said he had "lied repeatedly" about his relationship with the disgraced financier during the appointment process to the US ambassador role.

Lord Mandelson, a political appointment rather than a career diplomat, was sacked from his Washington role in September last year over his links with Epstein.

Sir Keir acknowledged he had known about Lord Mandelson's association with the sex offender, but said the peer had lied about the extent of that relationship.
