Welsh singer Tony Jones has died aged 86. He made up one half of the popular duo Tony and Aloma.
Jones had performed throughout Wales and beyond for over 60 years, starring in cabaret shows, television programs and concerts. But the duo's popularity rose rapidly in the 60s and 70s as they sold over 100,000 albums with classic songs such as Mae Gen i Cariad and Dim Ond Ti a Fi. Aloma was among the first to pay tribute, as she wrote a message on social media via a family member, saying that she "thanks you all for your sympathy and your kind words, without you all there would be no Tony and Aloma". Musical duo Iona and Andrew Boggie, Iona and Andy, also paid tribute, writing: "We have today lost someone who is dear. A great songwriter, a wonderful voice and a very lovely person.
"Without him we wouldn't be playing guitar and singing - I learned almost all their songs! I went to every concert in the 60s and more recently Iona and Andy sang at their hotel in Blackpool.
"He will be greatly missed and there will be no one like Tony and Aloma. Our condolences to his family."
Paying tribute to Tony Jones, the Sain record company that published his music said that he was "a friend of Sain for decades" and "one of the most popular duos that ever lived".
"Thank you, Tony, for your bright and innovative contribution to the light singing of Wales. We think of his family and friends."
Tony started composing songs when he was working as a farm servant in England and it was during that time that he met Aloma Jones.
In no time, Tony and Aloma were performing on concert stages and eventually turned professional - however, they separated for a few years at one stage.
After eight years apart - with Tony performing as a solo artist and Aloma singing with her partner Roy - the duo returned to each other in the mid-1980s.
