Netflix's latest offering, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, is now available for streaming and delves into the horrifying life of real-life serial killer Ed Gein (portrayed by Charlie Hunnam), shedding light on how his heinous crimes influenced modern Hollywood horror, reports the Mirror.
The series cleverly intertwines scenes from Gein's life with those from the making of films inspired by his gruesome deeds, which are believed to have been sparked by his morbid fascination with Nazi atrocities during World War II and the notorious Ilse Koch (played by Vicky Krieps).
The narrative also explores Gein's twisted relationship with fellow Plainfield resident Adeline Watkins (Suzanna Son), given their mutual interest in murder.
As the story unfolds, their relationship becomes increasingly complex as they plan to wed and Gein reveals his crimes to Adeline. But what about the real-life Adeline?
Gein himself never publicly disclosed any information about being romantically involved with Adeline Watkins, leaving the truth shrouded in mystery.
However, it is known that Watkins was indeed a real person who claimed to have had a long-term relationship with Gein spanning two decades.
In a 1957 interview with the Minneapolis Tribune, syndicated by the Wisconsin State Journal, Watkins revealed that she almost married Gein, who was infamously known as the 'Butcher of Plainfield' and the 'Plainfield Ghoul'.
She went on to describe him as "kind and sweet", sentiments echoed by Watkins' mother, who said he was "polite" and always made sure her daughter was back from dates by 10pm.
Watkins also revealed that Gein even proposed to her, but she turned him down after saying she was "afraid" she wouldn't be "able to live up to what he expected of me".
Despite the pair enjoying different books, she disclosed how they "discussed every murder" they'd come across.
Throughout their courtship, they also visited the cinema and frequented taverns for beer, though she admitted Gein would have "much rather" enjoyed a milkshake.
Nevertheless, merely weeks after the newspaper piece appeared in the Stevens Points Journal, Watkins disputed the account and insisted the original report was "blown up out of proportion" and featured "untrue statements", denying neither she nor her mother had described him as "sweet".
She continued by stating that whilst she had been acquainted with Gein for two decades, any routine contact only took place following 1954.
Watkins revealed she only encountered Gein for seven months intermittently, with the pair attending the cinema occasionally and him calling at her residence.
She also verified she'd never stepped foot inside Gein's property, where he'd stored the proof of his offences and ghastly keepsakes from his victims.
