Penny Lancaster has confirmed that her husband, the legendary rocker Rod Stewart, has been in a painful accident involving a tree. After admitting that they are both "tree huggers," the model, 54, opened up about a previous incident in which a casual boat ride went disastrously wrong. In a recent interview, the mum-of-two shared that she and Rod, who have been married for 18 years, enjoy the outdoors and find touching mature oaks and topiary in their garden "really grounding." The Loose Women panellist also told the Radio Times she has hopes of curating her own TV nature programme and revealed she received a bright blue narrow boat from Sir Rod as a 50th birthday present.
It was on this boat, she named Bluebell, that the accident occurred. Penny shared that Rod gifted her the vessel after she became captivated with them during long walks along the canal during lockdown. The model recalled: "We’d see these beautiful narrow boats and I thought, 'That’s a slow life, isn’t it'. "They go five miles an hour, and it’s all among nature. I told my mum that I’d love one. So she was like, 'Hint hint, Rod.'" However, on one occasion, while they were out on the boat, Penny revealed that Rod had ended up with a tree on top of him.
Penny added that BlueBell is their sanctuary for when "life gets fast", before detailing the painful near-miss and saying: "We’ve got a bedroom at the front, and one time Rod was lying in there with the doors open while I was at the other end. Then I went, 'Oh darling, hang on.'
"We crashed into the bank, and a willow tree came into the bedroom, Rod was lying there with a tree on top of him," she added.
This isn't the first time Rod and Penny have narrowly escaped disaster, as they were nearly killed after swerving in front of a lorry during the early days of their relationship.
At the time, the Maggie May icon was 54, dating Penny, 28 and was taking the blonde bombshell on a spin in his red Ferrari. But according to Penny's new book, Someone Like Me, things soon went downhill in the luxury vehicle.
Penny recalled how they went out together in Spain as he was on a "mission to impress" and drove like a "Formula One racer" zig-zagging up and down the mountains.
The model explained that she was grasping either side of the seat, terrified, when Rod overtook a car on a bend that was driving what he had deemed to be "too slow".
Screaming as she covered her eyes, Rod suddenly swerved and lost all colour in his face as they saw a lorry driving towards them.
She said in the book: "Rod's face was ashen as he lurched back into his lane. That drive goes down in history as the day Rod almost killed us, and I still get anxious if I have to get in a fast car with him."
