Bridgerton enthusiasts have been thrown into complete chaos after Netflix unveiled the release news, following previous announcements that left viewers in tears and producer Shonda Rhimes dropping hints about the show's future, reports the Mirror.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the official Bridgerton account posted a teaser from the upcoming fourth series.

Accompanying the image, a message declared: "One thing is certain, gentle readers, a masquerade is like no other event.

"Prepare yourselves, for anything can happen. Bridgerton Season 4 shall debut in 2026."

Numerous supporters flocked to social media to react to the announcement, with one individual writing: "Is that January or December 2026? Kind of a massive difference" whilst sharing a GIF of Eloise Bridgerton (portrayed by Claudia Jessie) shouting in series one to "make haste".

The Bridgerton account replied: "Patience, my dear. All will be revealed when this author declares it so."

Another devotee penned: "Can we do a Colin Bridgerton and bribe you to know the exact date?"

A third remarked: "ADMIN I NEED YOU TO BE MORE SPECIFIC" whilst a fourth observed: "Admin it's my birthday I think that legally means you have to tell me the date."

Others were simply thrilled about the new series as one declared: "Sophie Baek you will steal the hearts of many."

Someone else observed: "Gonna see Pen and Colin in their happily married life.... with a baby. Oh good Lord."

A third posted on Instagram: "I am very excited for this!" The release dates for Bridgerton's seasons have varied over the years, with the first series gracing our screens on Christmas Day 2020 and the second series making its debut on 25 March 2022.

In contrast, the latest third series was divided into two parts, with the first half premiering on 16 May 2024 and the final part on 13 June 2024.

As such, it's unclear when series four will be released, but considering Netflix's growing trend of dividing its most popular programmes to sustain subscriptions, it's probable that the new series will be broadcast in segments.

Before the poster was unveiled, Bridgerton enthusiasts were given a sneak peek of some behind-the-scenes footage from series four on Valentine's Day this year.

There were numerous shots from the pivotal masquerade ball, showcasing members of the Ton in full regalia, including Penelope Bridgerton (played by Nicola Coughlan) and Violet Bridgerton (portrayed by Ruth Gemmell).

Furthermore, in May, fans were treated to a scene of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) laying eyes on Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) for the first time and being instantly captivated by the enigmatic lady in silver.

In the clip, all the eligible ladies were vying for Benedict's attention as he strolled through the ball.

However, his gaze was solely fixed on Sophie as she admired the dazzling chandelier at the lavish event.

Sophie was then asked to dance by one gentleman, leaving Benedict looking distressed that he could lose her after only just seeing her for the first time.

Bridgerton season 4 will be released on Netflix in 2026
