Strictly Come Dancing's Ellie Goldstein has put fans' minds at ease, explaining that her "teary" moment during Saturday night's first live show was not due to distress, but simply a reaction to a long day of rehearsals. The 23-year-old model, actress, and author sparked concern among viewers when she was seen being supported on stage by professional dancers Dianne Buswell, Karen Hauer, and fellow contestant Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. This occurred despite the judges warmly receiving her Cha Cha with dance partner Vito Coppola.
Addressing the speculation in an Instagram post on Sunday, Ellie expressed her excitement about performing on the BBC One show. Alongside a picture of herself in a shimmering tasselled dress, she wrote: "Thank you all so much for the incredible love and support! I'm over the moon that so many of you enjoyed watching me dance last night - I'm honestly having the time of my life. This really is a dream come true."
She also took the opportunity to praise the team supporting her throughout the process. "I feel so lucky to be surrounded by the most amazing support team: my wonderful family, my agents, the whole Strictly crew, and of course, my incredible dance partner Vito. I couldn't ask for better," she said.
Ellie further clarified why her eyes appeared watery during the live show, dispelling any misconceptions. "Just a little note: sometimes my eyes get watery after a long day - I promise I'm not upset! I'm doing so well and feeling SO happy, and your concern truly means the world," she wrote.
Emphasising her self-assurance and personal identity, Ellie declared: "Dancing on this stage makes me feel strong, sassy, confident, and completely myself. I'm loving every single minute! And one more thing - yes, I have Down syndrome, but it doesn't define me. Not even close. It's actually the least interesting thing about me," Ellie added.
Ellie initially achieved worldwide fame in 2020 when she became the first model with Down's Syndrome to feature in a Gucci advertising campaign. Throughout the last ten years, she has collaborated with leading brands including Nike, Vodafone, Primark, and Superdrug.
During Saturday's live broadcast, Ellie and Vito delivered the Cha Cha to Ariana Grande's Yes, And?, captivating the judging panel.
Anton Du Beke proclaimed her "a joy," whilst Craig Revel Horwood labelled the routine as "flat-footed" but commended her "natural rhythm."
The dynamic performance secured the duo four points each from Craig, Motsi Mabuse, and Shirley, with Anton contributing five points, delivering them a combined score of 17.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday night on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
