Barry George, the man cleared of the murder of Jill Dando, has been charged with raping and assaulting a 14-year-old girl in west London in 1987, following a detailed investigation. Mr George, of County Cork, Republic of Ireland, faces one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault for alleged attacks between 6 and 12 September 1987.

The complainant, now in her 50s, reported two separate incidents. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the probe, said: “These charges follow an investigation by a team of Met detectives.

"Specially trained officers continue to support the woman who has come forward.”

Mr George, born April 15, 1960, is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 29.

He was acquitted at the Old Bailey in London on August 1, 2008, of the murder of the BBC presenter, after a retrial, after his 2001 conviction was quashed on appeal due to unreliable forensic evidence
