Often overlooked in favour of other more famous seaside spots like Whitby Beach, this magnificent five-mile expanse of golden sand has become a beloved haven for families, ramblers, and those who simply cherish the sea and unspoilt shoreline. With an impressive 4.7 out of five rating on TripAdvisor, Filey Beach outshines both Whitby and Scarborough beaches when it comes to visitor approval.
Stretching from Filey Brigg in the north down to Bempton Cliffs, home to a celebrated RSPB nature reserve, the beach offers an enormous expanse of firm, immaculate sand, especially at low tide, when a quarter-mile width becomes visible. Moreover, Filey has secured recognition in the 2025 Yorkshire Coast Seaside Awards and regularly meets Blue Flag criteria for cleanliness and water standards. It proves perfect for a lovely autumn stroll.
To the north, Filey Brigg creates a rocky headland that offers excellent rock pooling opportunities and marks the end or beginning of the Cleveland Way coastal path.
Unlike some of the region's busier beaches, Filey retains a tranquil and old-fashioned character, with a rich fishing tradition that continues to this day.
Visitors can sometimes spot local fishermen working from their traditional "coble" boats. Adjacent to the seafront, a historic promenade showcases a Sculpture Trail, featuring artwork that encapsulates Filey's rich maritime heritage and native wildlife.
The sculptures were brought to life by artist Russ Coleman in collaboration with local residents.
Filey town is home to quaint shops, traditional cafes, and a variety of local pubs and eateries.
Just a short trip away, the breathtaking RSPB Bempton Cliffs tower over 300 feet above the sea, providing sanctuary for thousands of seabirds, including puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes.
Outdoing both scenic Whitby and Scarborough, one Reddit user proclaimed Filey Beach as their "favourite UK beach".
A visitor from Selby shared on TripAdvisor that it's "the best beach in Yorkshire" and "perfect for families", while Lou from Derbyshire labelled it the "best on the east coast", adding: "This beach is so clean and great for a stroll. Its crescent shape helps with the strong winds and the sand itself is perfect for walking on its the best on the east coast for sure."
Another reviewer noted: "Still the finest beach on the planet, with over five miles of glorious, firm, golden sand, stretching from Filey Brigg to the chalk cliffs at Speeton.
"The last two times that we have been, it was high tide and the beach wasn't visible, as the water comes right in. This time the tide was out and we could enjoy the magnificent spectacle."
A visitor from Wath-upon-Dearne commented: "We love Filey and have done for over 20 years, when the weather is good it's the best beach in Britain."
