A stunning UK village that's barely changed in hundreds of years is definitely worth visiting. Nestled in the Cotswolds, Castle Combe in Wiltshire is the perfect lcoation for anyone planning an autumnal weekend away.
Strolling through this village will make you feel as though you've stepped back in time. Famous for its stone cottages that 'haven't changed in centuries, the quaint spot has so many gorgeous sights and walking trails to enjoy. According to the travel experts at UK Hidden Gems, 'every corner' of this village is a picture of classic Cotwolds beauty.
Its simplistic charm and vintage feel made it the perfect filming location for the hit show Downton Abbey, although contrary to its name, there isn't actually a castle here at all.
However, there's definitely no shortage of things to do and see here. One of the main draws of the village is the St Andrew's Church, a gorgeous building dating back to the 13th century that you can still tour today.
Its beautiful design and peaceful atmosphere makes it the perfect place to visit, and the grounds that surround it are ideal for an autumnal stroll.
If you want to venture slightly further afield, then there are so many picturesque walking trails that begin in Castle Combe. The famous circular walk is one of the most popular, and one of the prettiest too.
It's about 4.3km long so perfect if you don't want to be out all day long. Starting at the centre of the village, you'll walk past the historic stone cottages, over bridges and through Becker's Wood, a peaceful conservation area that is the perfect spot for exploring.
There's also a brook that you can paddle in, if the weather happens to be warm enough.
And if you need to refuel after a day of exploring Castle Combe, there's nothing better than some pub grub and a few drinks. One of the most popular in the village is the Castle Inn, a charming countryside pub and hotel with cosy vibes that serves up brilliant local produce.
Although it might be a traditional English pub, the food menu is incredibly varied, with dishes such as steak frites, aubergene caponata, chicken kievs and, of course, fish and chips. There's also a wide range of beers, cocktails and wines, and a Sunday lunch served at the end of the week.
Fans of the pub on Tripadvisor have been leaving rave reviews, with one person writing: "The Castle Inn truly exceeded expectations. From the warm, inviting atmosphere to the quality of food and service, everything was spot on. The setting strikes just the right tone — comfortable, stylish, and relaxed — making it ideal for anything from a casual drink to a special meal."
Another said: "A varied and comprehensive menu with all possible diets catered for. A very clever chef in the kitchen! Most attentive and charming staff - top notch service. Dishes tried were - smoked haddock scotch egg, the cauliflower, celeriac and the battered haddock - all good. No room for dessert unfortunately. Definitely be back."
