Donald Trump’s second state visit to the UK is being seen as such a hit in Britain and the US that a return invitation for the King to visit America is being considered.

It is understood that the President intends to ask the King to come to America – possibly next year for the 250th anniversary of the country gaining independence from the UK. A White House official confirmed that it was early in the planning.

Ingrid Seward, Editor of Majesty Magazine, said Mr Trump clearly looked bowled over by the reception he was given by the monarch and Royal Family in Windsor this week. She added: “The President was on his best behaviour and took an almost childish delight in the pageantry being laid on for him.

“It was the supreme example of the soft power of the monarchy – which King Charles knows only too well is the best in the world. The King was obviously both amused and bemused by Trump.”

Ms Seward was not surprised that a royal trip to the US is being outlined but suggested Charles may ask William and Kate to go in his place.

She said: “There is almost certainly a US visit in the pipeline. But it will be far more likely to be the Prince and Princess of Wales. Charles has been to America more than 20 times over the years. And he can use the excuse that they would rather see Kate and William. As William is not the head of state, it couldn’t be a state visit.”

However, Ms Seward added: “If the King goes next year, it will be for the anniversary of independence.” Mr Trump’s praise and affection for Britain and the Royal Family were on full display throughout his 48-hour visit to Windsor Castle and to meet the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at his country retreat Chequers in Buckinghamshire.

It cemented the two nations’ “special relationship” and went off without major hitches, despite around 5,000 protesters gathering in London and an alleged stunt by political campaign group Led By Donkeys, which saw images of Mr Trump and paedophile Jeffrey Epstein projected on to Windsor Castle.

Ms Seward said: “The King and Trump got along very well as they both enjoy being flattered and there was plenty of that going on. King Charles has met so many heads of state over the years. Trump’s amusement value and enthusiasm would have been refreshing instead of the fawning despots they so often encounter.”

The President was equally effusive. Asked what his favourite moment was, he told reporters on Thursday that it was spending time with the King, who is still undergoing treatment for cancer.

Mr Trump said: “Just being with King Charles. He’s a wonderful guy. I got to know him very well. I knew him before, but now I know him a little better.

“The artwork – I saw more paintings than any human being has ever seen and statues. But they treated us great. They treated our country great. I view that as being really respectful for our country. The way they did it... was beautiful. We had the biggest people in the world there.”

The positivity being felt on all sides was echoed by a royal source who was quick to deny rumours that US secret service agents and palace staff had argued ahead of the state banquet.

It was reported that “quiet irritation” had spiralled into a “heated exchange” during which voices were raised on both sides. But a palace insider said: “This story and these claims are categorically untrue.”

There were a few major state visit firsts for Mr Trump, who was previously hosted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019. Security was huge around the President – the target of two assassination attempts last year – and First Lady Melania Trump.

There was no procession around Windsor or any opportunity for the public to see the president, who did not give a speech to MPs in the Houses of Parliament.

But the visitors were treated to an incredible Beating the Retreat ceremony within the grounds of Windsor Castle. If William and Kate do visit the US again, Mr Trump is likely to be delighted as he has declared his fondness for the prince in the past.

And he used his state banquet speech to call William “remarkable” and referred to the princess as “radiant” and “beautiful”. He also told reporters: “William is wonderful. And I knew Charles as a prince and now I know him as a king and he’s doing very well. It was a lovely trip and I thought the press was really nice.”
