Legendary drummer, Viv Prince, who also played with the Pretty Things, has died aged 84. The White Stripes band member Jack White confirmed the news in a heartbreaking Instagram post. Viv was widely known for his eccentric behaviour and outlandish stage presence, influencing the likes of Keith Moon and The Kinks. The musician also played with several other bands over his career.

White led the tributes on Friday, sharing a picture of the "incredible drummer" on his Instagram page. "Viv was an incredible drummer, wild and full of abandon. He played for the band The Pretty Things, and he influenced many other musicians like Keith Moon," he wrote.

"I was lucky enough to meet Viv some years ago who was working on his farm in Portugal at the time. He was an inspired and eccentric rock and roller and maybe I’ll have to put together a team to work on a documentary about this man one day.

"Safe travels into the sweet beyond Viv, you were one of the real ones. -III"

The cause of death has not been reported.

Social media users flocked to the comment section and offered their condolences.

One penned: "So sad to hear, Viv was pretty much the only musician of my formative era that I had any personal connections with. Wonderful to hear you were familiar with his work."

Another remarked: "One of my all-time favorites, his fills on some of that early stuff is still mind blowing."

A third penned: "Pretty Things should be raved about as legends. RIP Viv."

Born in Loughborough in 1941, Prince joined The Pretty Things in 1964, and would often cause havoc on stage.

After he left the band, he performed with a range of others including deputising on gigs for The Who, the Honeycombs and Hawkwind.
