Lily James in Downton Abbey

The curtain is about to fall on ITV's globally adored period drama. The third and final film, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, will be gracing cinemas this month, a full fifteen years after the original series first aired. Over the course of six seasons and two films, audiences have followed the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic staff through scandals, heartbreaks and significant historical events, including the sinking of the Titanic and the First World War.

Naturally, over a span of fifteen years, the show has bid farewell to numerous characters and not all the actors who portrayed them will be returning for the saga's concluding chapter. However, many have gone on to achieve remarkable things. Here's a recap of where they are now...

Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil Branson)

The Crawley's youngest child was adored by fans and her death in series three left many devastated.

Since leaving the show, Jessica Brown Findlay has appeared in a number of films and TV shows, including period drama Harlots, and the 2018 film The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society alongside fellow Downton alum, Lily James.

Most recently, Jessica played Lucy Lambert, the mother of a child who was switched at birth, in ITV's Playing Nice.

Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley)

It's admittedly hard to forget Matthew Crawley, the middle-class lawyer who suddenly found himself enmeshed with the aristocracy when he became the Earl of Grantham's heir. Fans of the show will remember Matthew's dramatic love story with Lady Mary and shocking exit when he was killed off in the 2012 Christmas special.

Eurovision fans will recognise actor Dan Stevens from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, a comedy about the competition where he played a Russian singer called Alexander Lemtov.

Dan has also been in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and will return to the franchise in 2027 for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

Lily James (Lady Rose Aldridge)

Lady Rose, the rebellious niece of Maggie Smith's Violet, was one of Lily James' breakthrough roles and a main character in series four and five.

Lily has gone on to a number of very high-profile films and TV shows, including becoming a princess in a live-action remake of Disney's Cinderella and playing a young Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.

She also starred as Pamela Anderson in Hulu's series Pam & Tommy. Controversially, Pamela Anderson said she was not consulted about the production and, though she felt no ill will towards Lily, called out the show's producers: "You still owe me a public apology."

Matthew Goode (Henry Talbot)

Henry Talbot is a relatively recent Downton addition, first appearing in the 2014 Christmas special and only making sparse appearances since then but making quite the impression by sweeping Lady Mary off her feet. Though Matthew Goode briefly appeared in the first Downton film, he did not appear in the second and won't in the third.

Matthew's filmography is a long one and he's been in some hugely successful shows and films since Downton. He played Anthony Armstrong-Jones in The Crown, vampire Matthew de Clairmont in A Discovery Of Witches, and Captian Morton, the primary villain in The King's Man, a prequel to the popular Kingsman films.

Most recently, he was the troubled Carl Morck in Netflix's Dept. Q.

Siobhan Finneran (Sarah O'Brien)

Protection

Cora's maid was sometimes a bit of a villain on the show, especially in the first season when she and Thomas Barrow tried to have Mr Bates fired. Ultimately, Siobhan and her character left in the third season.

After she left Downton, Siobhan appeared in many crime thrillers, such as the BBC's award-winning series Happy Valley. This March, she played the lead role, DI Liz Nyles, in ITV's Protection, a series exploring the UK's witness protection system.

Tom Cullen (Lord Tony Gillingham)

The Gold

Mary's unlucky suitor Tony Gillingham was played by Tom Cullen. Both character and actor left after Mary chose not to marry him in series five.

Tom Cullen has been in a lot of TV series since Downton, but most recently he played John Palmer in both seasons of the BBC's The Gold. Following the events surrounding the Brink's-Mat robbery in 1983, Tom's John Palmer is a gold dealer who helped melt down and launder over £20 million worth of gold.

Rose Leslie (Gwen)

Vigil

Gwen, a maid in the first series, dreamed of a life where she wasn't a servant and, with the help of Lady Sybil, was eventually able to make that happen, leaving Downton to become a secretary.

Rose Leslie, who played Gwen, is best known for her role as Ygritte in Game of Thrones. While her characters on-screen romance with Jon Snow got underway, Rose and Jon's actor Kit Harington also fell in love and are now married.

Rose is also one of the leads in the BBC's crime drama Vigil, alongside Suranne Jones, which has been renewed for a third season.

Downton Abbey can be streamed on ITVX. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale was released in cinemas on 12 September.
