The FBI released pictures of a "person of interest" in the investigation into the killing of Charlie Kirk. In a post on X including two images of the person, the FBI Salt Lake City account said: "We are asking for the public's help identifying this person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University."
The images show a man wearing dark sunglasses, dark clothing and t-shirt that seemingly has the United States flag. These are the first images law enforcement has released of an individual they believe may be involved in Kirk's death. FBI officials in the Salt Lake City office didn't say the person pictured is the suspected gunman.
Mr Kirk, 31, founder of Turning Point USA and a staunch ally of Donald Trump, was gunned down on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through right-wing circles.
Investigators are hunting the killer who is still at large, two people questioned earlier by police were released.
In a news conference, authorities said the shooter appeared to be on the roof, before fleeing the scene at Utah Valley University yesterday, Wednesday September 10. They then fled off campus into a neighbourhood.
A shot was fired at 12:20 local time as Kirk was taking a question from a student. Footage shows him immediately collapse and blood can be seen on his neck.
The right-wing activist posted footage on his TikTok account just minutes before the fatal shooting yesterday.
He told the crowd: “That’s a lot of people, Utah. Gather up.
“I’m going to be here for a couple of hours, get comfortable.”
US President Donald Trump has ordered flags to be flown at half-mast after the tragedy. He told reporters: "You don't replace Charlie Kirk."
"He was unique, as you all know, as well as I do, he was a unique man, but we'll do the best we can."
The US Undersecretary of State, Christopher Landau, says "appropriate action" will be taken against "foreigners who glorify violence".
In a post on X, Landau says he has been "disgusted" to see comments on social media "praising, rationalising or making light" of the killing of Charlie Kirk and those who "glorify violence and hatred" are "not welcome visitors" to the country.
