Lily Allen has hit out at people flying the national flag - and claimed St George himself would be put in a migrant hotel if he came to England today. The singer, 40, complained about the increase in people flying the St George's Cross and said the "only acceptable" time to see a flag is during a football tournament. The It's Not Fair singer made the comments during a recent episode of her Miss Me podcast where she was joined by Rizzle Kicks star Jordan Stephens.

Prime Minister Kier Starmer recently said he is “very encouraging” of people flying national flags, but said they can be devalued when flown “purely for divisive purposes”. Some politicians have decried their removal, while others claim the increased number of flags is a result of xenophobia or racism.

She told the Miss Me? podcast: "Do you know, yesterday I was driving on the motorway, and the sheer volume of St. George's Crosses and Union Jacks being hung from bridges and painted badly on roundabouts really made me think about what is going on here."

Jordan quizzed: "Are you not into national pride?"

"I mean, I think the only acceptable time for St. George's Cross is if England have made it into the finals of the Euros or the World Cup," she replied. "That is, for me, the only time that we need to see those flags."

Jordan then claimed St George was of Syrian heritage with historians having previously suggested the "Patron Saint" is believed to have been born in the late 3rd century in Cappadocia or Syria, and is Turkish. Its also believed by many that he was raised in Palestine.

On being told about St Georgre's connections to other countries, she said: "Oh, the irony. Palestinian? What? Hang on, you couldn't write this s**t."

Discussing what would happen to St George these days, Lily said: "No, he'd be being put up at a hotel and...'What's your name? You say St. George? Come, come. We've got a Premier Travel Inn with your name all over it'."

Her comments come in the wake of asylum hotel protests around the UK.

Lily previously sparked outrage after she poked fun at England's loss against Spain in the Euros final in 2024.

She shared a meme of bald beer bellied men sobbing into their pints while wrapped in Union Jack flags in the rain, with many seeing it as a swipe at working class fans.
