Donald Trump has revoked Kamala Harris's Secret Service protection, a US broadcaster has reported. While former US presidents are protected by the law enforcement agency for life after leaving office, ex-vice presidents receive protection for six months under United States law. That period ended for Ms Harris on July 21, but sources have told CNN that a previously undisclosed directive signed by then President Joe Biden had extended it for an extra year. Mr Trump reportedly cancelled that order on Thursday (August 28), according to the US broadcaster.
The Republican President's termination of Ms Harris's protections came ahead of a high-profile book tour by the Democratic politician. Her new memoir, 107 Days, details her presidential campaign and is due to be released in the US on September 23. Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Ms Harris, told CNN: "The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety." Ms Harris will lose access to round-the-clock official intelligence surrounding any potential threats as a result of the removal of her Secret Service protection. Federal agents will also stop guarding her home, leaving Ms Harris to pick up the bill for her private security, which could amount to millions of dollars per year.
