Police are appealing for information after a man was killed in a fatal crash as he walked down Scotland's busiest motorway.

The 52-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene after the incident on the M8 near Newhouse, North Lanarkshire on Thursday.

Emergency services received a report of a man injured on the eastbound section of road – which links Edinburgh and Glasgow – at about 12.40pm.

The road was closed for several hours to allow investigations to be carried out, reopening to traffic at about 6pm.

Police Scotland said that the male driver of a white Volvo HGV, which was also involved in the incident, was not injured.

Police Scotland thanked members of the public who had helped at the scene.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died and to all involved in this incident.

"I would like to thank the members of the public that stopped and assisted at the scene before emergency services arrived.

"We are continuing to carry out inquiries and I would like to appeal to anyone who has not already spoken to us and may have witnessed the crash, or the vehicles involved shortly before the incident, to please contact us.

"In addition, anyone with dash-cam footage is asked to get in touch as this may be able to assist our investigation."
