Netflix has unveiled a spine-tingling trailer for its brand-new series Wayward, ahead of its launch next month. The preview arrives after the streaming giant introduced a fresh crime thriller and another adaptation to captivate audiences, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The miniseries guarantees a gripping viewing experience and features Toni Collette, Mae Martin, Patrick J. Adams and Sarah Gadon, amongst others.
Netflix's synopsis states: "Nothing is what it seems in Tall Pines. After an escape attempt from an academy for 'troubled teens', two students join forces with a newly local police officer, unearthing the town's dark and deeply rooted secrets."
The trailer establishes the setting with Dempsey (portrayed by Martin) relocating to partner Laura's (Gadon) former hometown, which also happens to be where the mysterious Tall Pines Academy is located.
When peculiar incidents begin occurring in the community, connected to the bizarre youth correctional establishment and its cryptic leader, Evelyn Wade (Collette), Dempsey begins investigating thoroughly to discover what's truly happening.
Viewers are shown a sequence of eerie visuals, including Evelyn's unusual therapy sessions with the adolescents.
"We use groundbreaking therapeutic techniques to solve the problem of adolescence," Evelyn declares in a television advertisement for the academy.
Numerous Netflix enthusiasts flocked to the comments section beneath the trailer on X (formerly Twitter) to express their anticipation for the upcoming mystery thriller. One person wrote: "I see Toni, that's all I need to make a decision to watch lol [sic]," as another simply said: "reminder set".
A third posted: "This cast alone makes it a must watch," while a fourth said: "Sounds intriguing I can't wait to see Wayward premiere."
Another person added: "All you have to say is Toni Collette. Love her!"
Wayward not only features Canadian non-binary comedian and performer Martin, but the Feel Good favourite also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer on the limited programme.
Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, Martin revealed they have "often" crafted or discussed characters navigating their teenage years and coming-of-age.
The performer confessed they pulled from their own memories during their developmental period: "I was a wayward teen in the early 2000s, and my best friend was sent to one of these troubled teen institutes when she was 16."
Martin continued: "She came back and had just the craziest stories about it."
This ignited Martin's fascination to delve into the obscure realm of troubled teen facilities and the sector in its entirety.
Alongside Martin, Ryan Scott acts as co-showrunner on Wayward with the executive producer revealing he aimed to "explore why one generation always ends up hating the next".
As viewers may have spotted from the trailer, Wayward also contains references to other beloved pictures, including Girl, Interrupted, Fargo, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which Martin and Scott wished to include. The cast also features Sydney Topliffe as Abbie, Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila, Brandon Jay McLaren as Dwyane Andrews, Tattiawna Jones as Rabbit, Isolde Ardies as Stacey, Joshua Close as Duck, Patrick Gallagher as Chief Bartell, Gage Munroe as Riley, and Byron Mann as Brian.
Wayward will be released on Netflix on September 25
