It's always intriguing to hear what tourists make of our country, particularly when it comes to visiting the seaside. This was the case for Niki, an American who relocated from Florida to Peterborough and is now on a mission to discover everything the UK has to offer.
After visiting a beach in Norfolk, Niki was flooded with recommendations to visit Skegness, Lincolnshire, which she has since labelled the "most unique place in the UK" she has encountered so far. She told her TikTok followers: "This place was unique alright - a very peculiar place, but I will say that the water here looks much better at low tide than in Hunstanton."
Venturing into an amusement arcade, Niki noted it quickly became clear why the town is fondly referred to as Skeg Vegas. "I kind of see it because it's a little bit out there and strange - but I'm not sure if that is in a good or bad way yet," she commented.
However, a disappointed Niki soon likened the pier in Skegness to a "rubbish Chuck E. Cheese" - a restaurant chain favoured by young families in the US due to its array of arcade machines and live character shows.
"This place definitely paints itself as the Las Vegas of the UK," she continued, recognising the town's 'Welcome to Skeg Vegas' sign, which mirrors its American equivalent. "And it is weird and whacky in the way that Las Vegas is."
Upon seeing the Skeg promenade, Niki compared it to the "real Las Vegas strip."
Niki went on to joke: "I'm going to ruffle some feathers now. I'm very aware that fish and chips is the food that you eat when going to the seaside - so naturally I got ramen from Wetherspoon's."
During her trip to the Pleasure Beach, she concluded: "Skegness in one word - interesting."
Niki's entertaining video has racked up more than 4,000 likes over the past 24 hours – with viewers flocking to the comments to voice their opinions. One TikTok user recommended: "You need to go to Skegness Raceway! Right next to the Skeg Vegas sign."
Another explained of the seaside town: "You have to have the mad nostalgia of childhood holidays here to appreciate it. Also the whole Skeg Vegas thing is very tongue in cheek. It was just a jokey nickname everyone had for it for years then Skegness jumped on it and made it official."
A third commented: "Live in Skeggy and omg it's awful." Niki responded in jest: "I mean, can't be worse than Peterborough."
Whilst a fourth TikTok user confirmed: "I've been to both and can say that Skegness is absolutely nothing like Vegas."
