Sir Rod Stewart has launched a furious swipe at Sir Ed Davey after the Lib Dem leader revealed he would boycott Donald Trump’s upcoming state banquet at Buckingham Palace. The rock legend took to social media with a cutting post dripping in sarcasm, writing: “Well done Sir Ed Davey for snubbing an invitation from Buckingham Palace to meet the only man that could put an end to the war in the Ukraine ....Donald Trump,” before signing off with “Sir Rod Stewart CBE.”
The rock icon made his frustration clear with his remark that Davey had refused the chance to confront Trump face-to-face during his state visit, where he could have pressed him on using his influence to end the conflict. Fan reaction was mixed, with some praising him comment and others slamming it. One stunned follower fumed: “Yet another rock hero from my childhood showing his true colors. Ugh. I love your music, but I can’t get behind listening to it anymore with viewpoints such as this.”
But some backed the 79-year-old star’s stance. One supporter posted: “Yes! Rod Stewart recognizes the greatness of Donald Trump!” while another joked: “Rod Stewart as a Trumper wasn’t on my Bingo card.”
Others were left baffled, with one pleading: “God, please tell me he is being sarcastic.”
The father-of-eight’s outburst followed Sir Ed’s announcement that he will snub the lavish state banquet next month, where King Charles and Queen Camilla will host Trump and his wife Melania during their three-day visit to the UK.
The Lib Dem leader insisted he made the decision after weeks of prayer with his wife Emily, saying it was designed to “send a message” over Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.
Sir Ed admitted the invite went against his “instincts” to refuse, calling it an “honour.” But he argued Trump has the power to end the violence in Gaza by leaning on Israel, Qatar and Gulf states that hold sway over Hamas.
He told the BBC: “If Donald Trump tells [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu to stop this, it ends tomorrow. If Donald Trump uses his influence over Qatar and other Gulf states that Hamas relies on, all the hostages could come home tomorrow.”
Sir Ed added: “Boycotting the banquet is the one way I can send a message to Donald Trump and [UK Prime Minister] Keir Starmer that they can't close their eyes and wish this away.”
But Rod accused the Lib Dem leader of wasting the perfect opportunity to challenge Trump directly at Windsor Castle instead of grandstanding from the sidelines.
Rod, 79, has been passionately supportive of Ukraine—displaying the Ukrainian flag and photos of President Zelensky during his show in Germany, despite boos from some of the crowd
He has gone further by personally helping Ukrainian refugees—renting a house for a family of seven, employing two Ukrainians in his crew, and even organising supplies to be driven into Ukraine
