Almost 900 small boat migrants crossed the Channel illegally over the bank holiday weekend, taking the number who have arrived since Sir Keir Starmer took office to more than 52,000.

GB News figures show 655 arrived in UK waters across Monday.

On Sunday, 212 migrants made the illegal journey in four dinghies. The news comes as it was announced migrants are to enter Britain quicker despite asylum reforms.

The latest arrivals plunge the Government's "smash the gangs" policy into even deeper crisis.

GB News has been told that since the new partial returns deal with France became operational on August 5, no migrants have yet been sent back over the Channel.

Through that same period, 3,502 migrants have arrived in the UK.

Although the height of summer is normally the busiest period for crossings, bad weather in the Channel had largely prevented crossings for the better part of a week.

A short break in the weather over the bank holiday allowed 867 migrants to reach UK waters.

It takes the total who have crossed since Labour came to power in July last year to 52,180.

For this year so far, the figure is 28,938.

That total is 50 per cent, and almost 10,000, ahead of the 19,293 who crossed at this point last year.

On Monday, small boat migrants continued arriving late into the night, with GB News reporting the arrival of another 73 on the Border Force vessel Hurricane just after 10pm.

A Home Office spokesman said: "The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay and we will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.

"That is why this Government has put together a serious plan to take down these networks at every stage.

"Through international intelligence sharing under our Border Security Command, enhanced enforcement operations in Northern France and tougher legislation in the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, we are strengthening international partnerships and boosting out ability to identify, disrupt, and dismantle criminal gangs whilst strengthening the security of our borders."
