Italy’s Via dell’Amore, the “Path of Love”, has officially reopened, inviting visitors to experience what’s often hailed as Europe’s most beautiful seaside walk.  Stretching along the rugged Ligurian coastline, this UNESCO-listed route winds through all five villages of the famed Cinque Terre, linking Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso with breathtaking clifftop views and colourful Mediterranean charm.

Originally carved in the 1920s during railway construction, the path quickly became a meeting place for young lovers from neighbouring villages. To this day, it remains a symbol of romance, with tunnels and walls covered in declarations of love and padlocks left by couples from across the globe.

The journey begins in Riomaggiore, a 13th-century village ingeniously built into the cliffs, where tall pastel houses tower above narrow streets and a small beach nestles at the harbour’s edge.

From there, the trail leads to Manarola, perched dramatically 70 metres above the sea, with multicoloured homes circling a tiny square and overlooking fishing boats bobbing in the harbour.

Further along lies Corniglia, the only Cinque Terre village not directly by the sea. Instead, it sits high on a cliff, accessible by a famous staircase of more than 350 steps. Its tranquil setting, terraced vineyards and panoramic views make it a peaceful contrast to its seaside neighbours.

Next comes Vernazza, often regarded as the jewel of Cinque Terre. With its medieval castle tower, narrow streets and a picturesque harbour filled with brightly painted fishing boats, Vernazza offers postcard-perfect scenery. Its sheltered bay is ideal for a swim or a seafood lunch by the waterfront.

Finally, the path reaches Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five towns. Known for its long sandy beach, a rarity along this rugged coast, Monterosso blends medieval history with a resort-like atmosphere, offering plenty of cafés, gelato shops and beach umbrellas.

Closed for 12 years following a landslide, the Via dell’Amore reopened in 2024 with safety improvements and timed entry slots.

From June to October, the path is open daily from 9am to 9.30pm, with last admission at 9pm. Tickets must be booked in advance on the official Cinque Terre website.
