JK Rowling has fired back at Sophie Molly, a transgender political activist, after Molly suggested that "cis" individuals should declare their gender before engaging in sexual activity.

Molly, who was previously dismissed by the Scottish Greens for referring to the Harry Potter author as a "torn-faced cow" on social media, expressed her outrage over the recent conviction of trans woman Ciara Watkin for "sex by deception."

In a post on X, the former general election candidate argued that the new law "treats trans people as though they are a disease. That they are harmful and dangerous. Why is c!s the default expectation? This is dehumanisation of trans people!"

In a subsequent tweet, Aberdeen-based Molly stated, "If trans people have to announce they are trans before sex, then cis people should as well. That's called equity."

Rowling responded to this suggestion with a tweet to her 14.5 million followers, "The man who witnessed me giving birth to his children might find it a tad odd that I keep announcing that I'm a woman before we have sex, but fine, I accept your terms," reports the Scottish Daily Express.

When fellow author Heidi Briones suggested that Rowling's husband Dr Neil Murray "might be amused", Rowling replied, "He was amused when I showed him this tweet. Naturally I've requested that he shouts 'I'm a man' before we get down to it because, as we all know, many totally valid women have a heavy beard and the ability to father children."

Adding a touch of humor to the situation, she concluded, "Unless I'm told I'm a woman on the hour I become a genderless blancmange."

Molly's use of the term 'cis' also sparked outrage, as many consider it an unnecessary term. Spin doctor Jack Montgomery humorously remarked, "Cis people should have to announce they're trans before sex? Like, as a prank?"

Last week, Watkin, 21, from Stockton-on-Tees, was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault and one count of assault by penetration after a trial at Teesside Crown Court.

After connecting with a man, also 21, on Snapchat in June 2022, they spent the night together where she engaged in sexual acts with him without revealing her transgender status, claiming she was menstruating to prevent him from touching her genitals.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Sarah Nelson stated, "It is clear from the evidence in this case that, prior to engaging in sexual activity with the victim, Watkin had made no attempt to inform him of her transgender status."

"The victim has made clear in police interview that he would not have engaged in sexual activity had he known that Watkin was transgender and, consequently, these events have had a significant impact on his mental wellbeing."

Watkin, who has gone by the name Ciara since she was 13, has not undergone gender reassignment surgery. Her defense argued that it should've been "blindingly obvious" she was biologically male, given the padded clothing inside her bra.

The judge stated: "The defence say this is an accused person who has fooled herself into believing she successfully deceived [him]. She so wants to be female, she has actually fooled herself."

Last year, the Crown Prosecution Service reviewed its guidance on the offense of "deception as to sex" for prosecutors in England and Wales, noting that the concept of gender in modern society was increasingly "complex."
