Very few places across the globe are off the beaten track nowadays, thanks to technological innovations like social media. Platforms like Instagram have turned small secrets into big business as influencers flock to "must-see" locations to capture the next big thing. This has resulted in over-crowding and some locations putting measures in place to restrict the number of visitors to their backyards.
According to McKinsey's Travel, Logistics & Infrastructure Practice report, busier summers are becoming busier and winters quieter as tourists look to explore when the sun is out. A report by Deluxe Holiday Homes analysed data on the annual international visitors for top tourist destinations, which showed that the top two destinations for visitors per km² were located in Thailand.
Topping the list was the island of Phuket in Southern Thailand. Known for its beautiful beaches and party atmosphere, the area offers a lot of different activities for tourist, including a vibrant nightlife. It also offers plenty of stunning mountainous scenery and shopping options, from food to clothing.
Phuket is the most crowded city that is better to be avoided this summer, having over 840K visitors per km², which is a huge amount considering the population there is normally around 70k. With 3,392 attractions and an average summer temperature of 27.4°C, Phuket can feel extremely packed, especially in peak season.
Another destination in Thailand is next, Pattaya comes in second with 179.8K visitors per km². Although significantly less than Phuket, it still sees a large number of visitors who are drawn to its beach resorts and entertainment. The city has 821 tourist attractions, and with a summer temperature of 27.73°C, it is almost identical to Phuket's. Despite having fewer attractions, its high visitor density makes it feel just as packed.
Paris, France, ranks third on the table with 166.6K visitors per km². While it doesn’t match the visitor density of Phuket or Pattaya, the city still draws massive crowds because of its historic landmarks. Paris has a whopping 10,000 tourist attractions, offering plenty to see. The lower visitor density, along with a cooler average summer temperature of 19.6°C, makes it more comfortable to get around in than the Thai cities.
Barcelona, Spain, follows Paris with 65.8K visitors per km², making it a noticeably less crowded destination but still popular with tourists. The city offers 5,912 attractions and an average summer temperature of 23.93°C, which is warmer than Paris but still cooler than the Thai cities. Its relatively smaller visitor density (compared to the front runners) makes it a better option for those wanting to avoid overcrowding.
Rounding out the top five is Miami in the United States. It ranks fifth with 56.7K visitors per km², and the city experiences significant tourist activity, though it has far fewer visitors compared to the top four. With 2,675 attractions and an average summer temperature of 28.6°C, Miami could be passed over for those wanting a quieter holiday destination.
