Instagram user Ibai Rider (@ibairider) went for a run through a forest on the island and suddenly came across a series of makeshift homes. He said: "The price of housing and rent is so exorbitant in Ibiza that many, even if they work, are forced to live like this.

"That with a salary of a thousand and some euros you have to live in a tent seems incredible to me.”

Jonathan Ariza, a mechanic and construction worker from Colombia who said he is seeking political asylum in Spain, lives in a trailer near the island's main hospital.

He told the Independent: "As long as tourists keep coming, there'll be people willing to live in precarious conditions to be employed.”

Ibiza attracts 3 million people annually with the industry representing 84% of the islands GDP.

Peak season can see the islands population swell by 300%, leading to an increase in buy to lets, a scarcity of housing for locals and an increase in property prices.

Average rents on the island increased by 23% between July 2023 and July 2024 according to data from property website Idealista.

Isabel María Pérez who live and works on the island told the BBC that the average cost of renting a single room is between €700 and €1,000 (£600 and £857) per month, while a small flat could be as high as €1,500 (£1,286).

She said: "The problem in other parts of Spain is that there isn't much work.

"Here there's all the work you could want, but there isn't anywhere to live."

The Spanish government has approved a law to cap the rentals in areas of the country where tourism is popular, but the move remains controversial in some tourist hotspots.

National landlord lobby ASVAL has rejected the cap arguing that such a move would shrink supply and raise prices as it advocates for increased construction of properties in areas of shortage.
