A European leader has found themselves in a spot of bother following a candid remark caught on a hot mic as journalists were leaving the high-stakes conference involving Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Europe's Coalition of the Willing.

The extraordinary summit brought together both the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents, with Zelensky receiving guidance from European allies who had convened in a separate meeting, subsequent to Trump's earlier discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at halting his incursion into Ukraine.

Top figures from the UK, France, Finland, Germany, and Italy were present at the assembly, alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the EU Commission.

Trump spoke of the European support, saying, "When it comes to security, there's going to be a lot of help," and added, "They are a first line of defence because they're there, but we'll help them out."

Beyond security commitments, some commentators suggest that Europe's delegates were keen to avoid a repeat of February's diplomatic debacle, which saw Zelensky blindsided by Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who levelled accusations at the Ukrainian head of 'gambling with World War 3', reports the Mirror.

While the press was permitted a glimpse into part of the discussions between all involved parties, upon their exit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's comparison of the U.S. media to her homeland's journalists was inadvertently broadcast via the hot mic.

In a candid moment caught on tape, she expressed gratitude to Trump: "Thank you for being so fair," unaware that the recording was still ongoing. This was followed by Finland's Alexander Stubb questioning the daily media routine, to which Meloni quipped about Trump: "But he loves it, he loves it," and then confessed her own media strategy, "He does it always, I never want to speak with my press."

Trump, seemingly uninterested in the remark, shifted the conversation to praise Finland's Prime Minister for his golfing skills. This interaction came after footage emerged of Meloni apparently sharing a laugh with President Trump, only to roll her eyes at the 79 year old shortly afterwards.

Having served as Italy's Prime Minister for over two years, Meloni's tenure has been marked by what her supporters deem a pragmatic approach domestically and towards the European Union, while critics label it an "autocracy-light" model.

Recent Ipsos approval ratings show her at 42%, with her party leading in voting intentions at 27.3%.

In a significant diplomatic move during the meeting with allied leaders, Donald Trump phoned Putin to convey the agreed conditions, later announcing that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump emphasised, "I think that the European nations are going to take a lot of the burden. We're going to help them, and we're going to make it very secure."

Trump also revealed that he "began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy," and that a three-way summit involving himself and the other two leaders would follow afterwards.
