In a moment many will hope they can look back on as a turning point in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, US president Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin came together in Alaska, US yesterday (Friday August 15).

After landing at Anchorage, the pair exchanged pleasantries before matters turned to the ongoing war in Ukraine. But, in a behind-the-scenes moment captured by The National Desk, we got a brief glimpse into what the future could hold for the two leaders.

While we can't hear what was being said between them, lip reader Jeremy Freeman has told the Irish Star that he thinks the US president told the the Russian leader "we'll get it over the line" in the behind-the-scenes moment caught on camera.

In what could be a possible hint at what's to come between the two, Jeremy believes that Trump told his counterpart: "Ah very good.... you should see mine... ok, good to see you and well talk again soon.... and we'll get it over the line."

Although the nature of what Trump was referring to when he reportedly said "we'll get it over the line" can't be known entirely, it comes on the back of the pair failing to reach a deal over a ceasefire.

This came after the presidents had been due to hold a joint press conference, but instead chose to read individual statements and took no questions from the on-looking reporters in attendance. However, it appears that the two leaders are set to meet again in the coming months as Putin extended an invitation for Trump to visit Russia.

As their public address drew to a close, Putin took the unusual step of switching to English to tell Trump: "Next time in Moscow."

Trump responded with, "Oh, that's an interesting one."

He added: "I'll get a little heat on that one, but I could see it possibly happening."

Following the conclusion of the meeting, a video was released by Putin's special envoy for investment and economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev.

He stated: "There were lots of issues that we discussed, and many we agreed. Some of them are to be agreed."

He further added: "And definitely it's very important that President Trump outlined a significant economic potential of cooperation between US and Russia."

In recent developments, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has taken to X to confirm that he is scheduled to meet the US president on Monday (August 18).

In a snippet from his post on the social media site, he wrote: "On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C, to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation."
