Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had their first in-person meeting since 2019, as the US and Russian leader arrived in Alaska on Friday (August 15) to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Following the historic encounter, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky broke his silence after Trump met with Putin. The 79-year-old President even sparked health fears when he prepared to shake hands with the Russian leader to negotiate a peace agreement for the Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, Trump's response to Putin's invitation to Moscow, made during the summit, was seen as awkward by many. The exchange was widely shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, with viewers suggesting the President is "being played".

After it was revealed that some understandings had been reached, though no formal agreement was established, Trump remarked: "We had some good meetings over the years and we hope to have that in the future.

"But let's do the most productive one right now."

The 72-year-old Russian leader responded: "Again, Mr President, thank you very much.

"And we'll speak to you very soon and probably see you again very soon. Next time in Moscow."

Trump's expression immediately changed as he replied: "Oh, that's an interesting one. I'll get a little heat on that one."

The footage of the exchange was posted on X with the caption: "President Putin tells President Trump in English to come visit Moscow next.

"This is a HUGE sign of respect. Peace is coming!"

After accumulating 347,000 views and hundreds of responses, the public had their say on the moment.

One viewer remarked: "Putin is playing Trump like a pawnshop banjo. While he is inviting Trump to Moscow he's cluster bombing Ukrainian apartment complexes."

Another observed: "I think it's the first time I've heard him speak in English in front of the press." A third quipped: "Putin looks at Trump like someone in love."

While a fourth chimed in: "'Peace is coming'. You are joking? Or you mean between Russia and the US? That was not the point of this meeting. Or was it? Bromance rekindled and sanctions off the table. Putin plays Trump like the fiddle."

And a fifth posted: "You're delusional."

The duo have been locked in a series of talks designed to broker a peace deal to end the Ukrainian conflict.

They seemed like old chums as the pair strolled down the red carpet towards Trump's awaiting Presidential motorcade.

Their behaviour was warmly received in Russia, where pro-Kremlin media hailed the 'cordial' reception.
