An expert has shared the underrated destination in Greece that visitors should choose over Santorini and Mykonos. Greece is a hugely popular visitor destination throughout the year, much thanks to its scenic islands, white sandy beaches, and crystal clear waters. However, that means that popular spots can swell with tourists, something that can seriously take the enjoyment out of a trip and really annoy locals who live there.

An expert has revealed that there is an underrated Greek island that people should visit instead of the crowded Santorini and Mykonos. In fact, there have been reports of British travellers cancelling their holidays to Santorini as the popular island gets too crowded. Jo Davies at Princess Yacht Charter has listed underrated destinations in Europe that we should consider and among them is a stunning Greek island that many Brits may have never even heard of.

That island, she says, is Syros. This small yet stunning island is located south-east of Athens but is largely undiscovered by international tourists. There are ferry services between the Greek capital and this island, meaning you can take a flight to Athens to get to this overlooked holiday destination.

Jo said: "Mykonos and Santorini are two of the most popular islands in the world, meaning that each year they are both packed with tourists. Yacht and boat owners, in particular, get frustrated due to overcrowding.

"However, what if I were to tell you there was an alternative nearby that was relatively unknown?

"That is Syros in Greece, it has the same rich history and charm as Mykonos and Santorini, but has remained hidden from mass tourism. The island showcases a mix of Greek Orthodox and Catholic heritage and is well-suited for anchorages due to its calm surrounding seas. Traditional villages like Ano Syros are a must-see, offering neoclassical architecture."

Others have had excellent things to say about Syros. One Reddit reviewer wrote: "It's a total gem. The food culture is amazing, with lots of nice places to eat and really nice hikes to secluded beaches. I've been to about 8 islands and have to say Syros is my fave. I'm in my 30s and out of my party phase and more drinking and eating nice food phase."

Another said: "I loved the fact that the tourists were almost all Greek, which lends itself to very good food no matter where you go."

Among the best things to do and see in Syros are Galissas Beach, Agathopes Beach, Agios Stefanos Church, Delphini Beach and Vari Beach. The island's top-rated beach, the aforementioned Galissas Beach, is a hit with visitors.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor said, "Nice sandy beach with stunning views of the sunset. Many options for sunbeds, but also a good space to lie on a towel."

A second wrote: "Awesome beach, family friendly with crystal clear water. Lots of umbrellas to rent for a few hours and lots of easy food and drink."
