Cornwall, with its sandy beaches, stunning coastline, ample surfing opportunities and dramatic cliffs, is arguably one of the UK's most beautiful counties. It's not just locals who adore this South West paradise as tourists from across the country frequently visit too. One of these visitors is George Kimm, a UK travel and food content creator.
George embarked on an overnight journey from London to Cornwall via the Great Western Railway (GWR) Night Riviera, sharing his experience on Instagram. The train departs from London Paddington and arrives in Penzance the following morning, with the total journey time slightly exceeding eight hours.
The travel fan provided an honest review of his experience, but one detail left his Instagram followers taken aback – the price. George booked a "very cosy" solo cabin on the train, equipped with a single bed, a table that doubles as a sink, a wardrobe, and under-bed storage, which he found "very useful".
GWR also provided some amenities, including soap. He pointed out that the toilets are located outside the cabins, but apart from that, he felt the train company "really had thought of everything else".
The London-based content creator added: "Before we left London Paddington I had a look in the onboard bar where you can sit down, relax. They also provide free tea and coffee with biscuits and when it comes to going to sleep, I actually had a really good experience."
After getting comfortable and doing some exploring, George watched the train depart from the station before retiring for the night. He shared that he found the sounds and movement of the train soothing, helping him drift off to sleep.
After waking up the next morning, George enjoyed his included breakfast in his cabin. He chose a cup of tea and a sausage bap, commenting that it was "very delicious".
The travel enthusiast continued: "And it was so lovely to have my breakfast whilst watching the countryside whizz by." He concluded his Instagram reel by revealing the cost of his journey and cabin, stating: "My ticket cost £119 and an additional £149 for the cabin."
George felt it was "such a cool experience" falling asleep in London and waking up in Cornwall. He believed it was "honestly so worth it" and something he would definitely repeat.
The Instagram post has since garnered an impressive one million views, thousands of likes and more than 400 comments. One user noted: "£75 return to Paris, just saying."
To which George responded: "Totally get it. This was a bucket list trip." Another commented: "Looks fun but the price is insane."
A third shocked viewer asked: "Omg... how much?" Another person even described the price as "criminal."
Other viewers spotted some advantages despite the hefty price tag, with one remarking: "This looks like a great experience but it's very costly for a return journey. I guess the benefit is both journeys are during the night so you aren't losing out on any holiday time."
A second chimed in: "Would love to do this!! Honestly would see the cost as part of the holiday, so special."
Great Western Railway Night Riviera travellers can secure an airline-style seat at no extra cost when they buy a ticket for the service, with prices for a single cabin beginning from £49 per passenger.
