ITV’s hit programme This Morning returned to screens with a touching tribute as one of its stars honoured actor Ray Brooks following his death earlier this month. Best known for his portrayals in Coronation Street and EastEnders, Brooks died aged 86 on Saturday, August 9. During Wednesday’s instalment of the daytime show, soap expert Sharon Marshall took a moment to discuss the actor’s contributions to TV.

During his time on Albert Square, Brooks starred as Joe Macer from 2005 until 2007, who infamously killed his wife, Pauline Fowler (played by Wendy Richard), during the 2006 Christmas Day special. The soap star had also portrayed Detective Constable Norman Phillips between 1963 and 1964. As she shared the latest updates from the soap world, Sharon stated: “I did want to start with EastEnders, if I may, just to pay my respects to the lovely actor Ray Brooks, who recently passed away. He appeared in Coronation Street and EastEnders.”

She remarked that he was a “lovely man,” and added: “I interviewed him quite a few times. Of course, the voice of Mr Benn, from childhood as well. I just wanted to say much love to the family.”

In a statement, Brooks’ grief-stricken loved ones confirmed that he had died after a short illness and revealed he spent the last few years of his life living with dementia.

The late actor’s sons Will and Tom stated: “His three true loves were family, Fulham Football Club, and spending time in Brighton, where he was born.”

During his career, Brooks famously narrated the BBC’s 1970s children’s TV show Mr Benn, an animated series which followed a man who time-travelled through a mysterious costume shop.

Although the series only released 13 episodes, it became well known as repeat episodes aired twice a year for more than 21 years.

He also featured in BBC comedy drama Big Deal and the acclaimed film The Knack… And How To Get It, which won the 1965 Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival

Shortly after Brooks’ death was announced, EastEnders’ official X page paid tribute to the star alongside a touching photo of the actor on set.

They penned: “We are deeply saddened to hear that Ray Brooks has passed away. Ray will always be remembered fondly by everyone that worked with him at EastEnders. Our love and thoughts are with Ray's family and friends.”
