The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Portugal, just as the summer holiday season kicks into high gear. As a key government body, the FCDO frequently provides updates on over 220 nations and territories worldwide.
Portugal, a favourite among British travellers with millions visiting annually, was the subject of an FCDO alert on Monday, August 11, as it revised its "safety and security" guidelines for the country.
The update reads: "The municipality of Albufeira has introduced a Code of Conduct which bans inappropriate behaviour in public places. Check out the rules that are now in force. If you break the rules, you could be fined on the spot from between 150 and 1800 euros.
"The Town Council has placed restrictions on the sale of alcohol from shops and supermarkets in certain parts of Albufeira between 11pm and 8am. For more information on the measures, including the areas affected, see Albufeira Town Hall's website."
Albufeira is one of the most popular Portuguese holiday resorts.
Elsewhere, the FCDO continues to remind people headed to Portugal on a British passport that their travel document will need a "date of issue" within the last 10 years, and an "expiry date" at least three months after their intended leave from the Schengen area.
You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Portugal, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is the case if you're going on holiday, visiting loved ones, taking up short-term training or studies, or planning to attend cultural or sporting events, as well as business meets.
Different rules apply if you plan to work in Portugal.
