If you’re looking for a perfect staycation in the UK, then there’s one village tucked in the Scottish highlands that could be just right. Widely known as "the jewel of the highlands", the village of Plockton is nestled in a sheltered bay with awe-inspiring views over Loch Carron.
The village is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland and is famous for its coral beach and beautiful coastal views. Although its a four-hour drive from the city of Edinburgh, the route is full of beautiful scenery. Plockton is packed with picturesque cottages dotted around the harbour, and even has palm trees thanks to its micro climate.
The Gulf Stream means the weather in Plockton is mild and wet - perfect for growing these New Zealand cabbage trees.
The trees were planted in the 60s and have grown along the waterfront ever since, giving the town a tropical vibe.
It’s home to fewer than 500 permanent residents, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Plockton is full of amazing seafood restaurants, pubs and cafes as well as plenty of outdoor activities.
Kayaking, sailing and rowing are all on offer and there’s a good chance you’ll spot dolphins, porpoise and otters as well as lots of seabirds.
If you want to explore all the village has to offer, go for a wander down the main street - Harbour Street. This street is packed with craft shops, cafes and even a distillery if you fancy sampling some Scottish gin and whiskey.
Even better, the town is just a short drive from the Isle of Skye which boasts some of the most beautiful and rugged scenery in the world.
It has hidden waterfalls, lush green forests and rocky mountains, and if you’re staying in Plockton it’s just an hour's drive away which makes it perfect for a day trip.
